Biodiversity

Legislation

Under the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006, every public body, including Parish Councils, must consider what they can do to conserve and enhance biodiversity.

Government guidance issued May 2023 suggests that as a public authority, town and parish councils must:

  • Consider what you can do to conserve and enhance biodiversity.

  • Agree policies and specific objectives based on your consideration.

  • Act to deliver your policies and achieve your objectives

To comply Parish Councils must agree their policies and objectives as soon as possible and then reconsider the agreed actions within 5 years of completing the considerations and earlier if needed.
